What to do if you are assaulted

  • Go somewhere safe.
  • Call someone you trust.
  • Do not shower or bathe; brush your teeth; eat, drink or smoke.
  • Do not change clothes. If you have changed clothes, bring the clothes you were wearing with you to the hospital.
  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible. The sooner you seek medical attention, the better your chances are of preventing pregnancy and of convicting your offender. Most medical facilities will do evidence collection up to 72 hours.
  • Report the attack to police.
  • Consider whether you want to file charges with the police.
  • Remember, it is not your fault.
  • Get help and support, such as counseling.
